Metrolinx Draws Up Plan to Fund Future Transit Expansion in the Toronto Area
The provincial agency which is responsible for public transit planning and funding in the Toronto Area, called Metrolinx, has announced plans for creating new revenue streams to fund transit expansion in the Greater Toronto Area, all the way from Oshawa, to Hamilton and even Kitchener. The area is home to almost 8 million people and if you include the Niagara Region it goes well over 8 million people. However the main backbone of transit in the region is the GO Transit line, which runs between the aforementioned cities. Metrolinx, has a big job to come up with a funding plan to pay for upgraded transit infrastructure not just within the region as a whole, but also with each of the individual communities that make up the Greater Toronto Area. That includes LRT's in Hamilton, and Mississauga, and most important the creation of a downtown relief line in Toronto.
The lack of proper transit in the Toronto area, has a huge cost outside whatever means Metrolinx plans to use to fund it's expansion plans. The Toronto Board of Trade has estimated that Gridlock in the Toronto area cost the economy between 6 and 10 billion dollars each and every year. And it also hurts the competitive reach of the city, especially as we are going up against the resource based economies of the cities of western Canada. Improved transit would have almost immediate benefits and that would be clear for everyone to see.

Metrolinx Contracts for Eglinton Line to Big: Engineers
Metrolinx is currently in the process of awarding the mega contracts for the procurement of LRT/Subway Stops as well as the Storage Facilities of the New Eglinton Crosstown LRT. The contract say local builders are to massive for them to effectively bid on in addition to taking on massive risk in the event they do not cover their numbers in such a way to mitigate the damage of going over budget. Metrolinx Puts a Halt on Scarborough LRT Funding
Metrolinx, the provincial agency which manages funding and operation of Transit in the Greater Toronto Area has put a halt to funding the conversion of the Scarborough Rapid Transit Line into a modern LRT as Toronto City Council recently voted to bring back the idea of a $3 billion dollar, 3 Stop Subway in Scarborough which will carry 35,000 people daily, that number is actually 15,000 less than the number of riders on the Sheppard Subway and it will cost more than Sheppard and have fewer stops than Sheppard.
It is possible that there will be no funding for any line as there is some degree of politics involved. If council members vote against the subway they will be punished politically, but without funding and Metrolinx out of the game there is a possibility that nothing will get built and Toronto City Council will be on the hook for the 85 billion dollars in sunk cost. Its sad for the people of Scarborough because of politics they will be stuck with the same beat up rapid transit line or no line if it is unable to be upgraded. They are a victim of politics.

No New Subway For Scarborough!!! Please
Well, spending 3 billion dollars for a 3 stop Scarborough Subway line to nowhere appears to be a huge waste of money. I thought council was about ending the gravy train? why waste our money like this. To be honest, I am of the opinion that Scarborough shouldn't get any rapid transit money at all.I can't explain how 1 billion dollars per subway stop makes any sense whatsoever. It's just crazy especially because we need a downtown relief line like right now. The Yonge Subway Line is crowded beyond capacity and is packed late into the night on almost any night you will find it a challenge to get a seat, and most likely end up standing and packed in tighter than sardines at the Kensington Market Fish Stand.
We could end up spending 3 billion dollars on a new 3 stop subway to Scarborough and then once they get to Bloor there is no way they are getting downtown. The cost of the LRT is 1.8 billion all paid by the province, but the Scarborough people want to act all crazy and think they deserve a subway, before you know , Mississauga which is far bigger gets its first LRT line. There is a need for LRT in Mississauga
